We’re thrilled that global design and consultancy firm Arcadis recently joined CitySmart as a Principal Partner. Here’s a snapshot of the company and the role it’s playing in helping build sustainable cities.
What does Arcadis do?
Arcadis is a design and consultancy firm focusing on natural and built assets. Its 27,000-strong team provides major companies and governments around the world with cutting-edge design, consultancy, engineering, business advisory, architecture and project management.
What kind of projects does it work on?
The Arcadis portfolio is broad and extensive. In Australia this includes:
- 1 William Street Brisbane
- 180 Brisbane, Ann Street
- Sydney Harbour Bridge
- WestConnex, Sydney
- Northern Beaches Hospital, NSW
Internationally, the Arcadis portfolio includes:
- The Millau Viaduct, France
- Taiwan High Speed Rail
- East Side Coastal Resiliency project, New York
- Burj Khalifa, Dubai
What’s the overarching philosophy?
Central to Arcadis’ business is a passion about improving quality of life for communities across the world.
This powerful idea is central to the company’s employee recruitment strategy. As Greg Steele, Regional CEO for Australia Pacific, says: “I’m not only looking for people who are great at what they do but also who look up at the world around them and ask, ‘how can I make this better?’”
What role does sustainability play?
From climate change projects and integrated cities to iconic towers, superfast rail, high tech hospitals, clean water, multimodal transport and environmental protection, a sustainability perspective is becoming ever more important to the company’s projects.
Claire Hodgson, Arcadis Australia Pacific Sustainability Lead, points to the three pillars of sustainability: social (people), environmental (planet) and economic (profit).
“The environment has always been a priority for Arcadis in Australia, but sustainability is a much bigger issue that deals with future economic and social impacts as well. While we’re now winning specific sustainability projects, we also consider sustainability solutions across our diverse range of projects, including roads, rail, buildings and other infrastructure design and delivery.”
Cities of the future
Arcadis is active in thought leadership on city planning and the future impact of infrastructure and technology projects.
Some great recent blog posts include Reinventing Paris, a piece on Implementing and Financing Climate Adaptation, and Bold Moves needed for the Future of Urban Mobility.
The Sustainable Cities Mobility Index – in which Brisbane topped the Australian cities on the Index – also makes for a fascinating read, including some lessons for Australia.
